Regimental Silver

At present the 4th R.T.R. hold and maintain in safe-keeping the regimental silver of the L&B.

Equipment

TANKS

The tanks used by the regiment were Vickers Light Mark VIB. Each tank was named, usually in line with the Squadron e.g. names beginning with 'A' for 'A' Squadron. Examples of tank names are:

Bannockburn
Blue Bonnet
Cervantes.

Names such as Bewitched and Bewildered were turned down for approval. Another suggestion that was not allowed to flow from the painter's brush was The Broons.
Names were painted on the off-side of the tank.

CARRIERS

Carriers were named in the same way. Examples are: Beau Geste.

Squadrons

The Regiment comprised Regimental Headquarters (RHQ) with 4 Squadrons under it: 'A', 'B', 'C' and HQ Squadron. Each of Squadrons 'A', 'B' and 'C' comprised 6 troops: Tank Troops 1 and 2; and Carrier Troops 3, 4, 5 and 6. Each tank troop comprised three tanks, with three men in each tank: a commander; a gunner/wireless operator; and a driver. Each tank troop therefore comprised 9 men. Each carrier troop comprised three carriers, with four men in each: a commander; a driver; a gunner (on the Bren gun); and a wireless oeprator. Each carrier troop therefore comprised 12 men. A Squadron would therefore generally comprise 66 men.

Each carrier troop carried a coloured pennant for identification purposes. For example, 6 Carrier Troop carried a yellow pennant.

HQ Squadron included tanks, carriers, lorries and motorcycles.

RHQ included Colonel Mike Ansell and his 2 i/c Major Harry Younger. The Earl of Haddington had been in command of the regiment until he was bowler-hatted in the early part of the war, at which point Harry Younger (of Younger Brewery) was made up to Lieutenant-Colonel and commanded the regiment. On 17 March 1940, Lt-Col Mike Ansell of the Inniskillings Dragoon was brought in to command the 'Loathsome and Bloodies' and Harry Younger opted to become Major and stay with the regiment.
